কী যে দুর্ভোগ! বৃষ্টির বাধায় জলস্থলে স্থবির জীবন ,Rain brings Dhaka city to a standstill

তিন দিন ধরে টানা বর্ষণে রাজধানীতে জনজীবন বিপর্যস্ত। গতকাল শুক্রবারই বিভিন্ন স্থানে বৃষ্টির পানিতে রাস্তা তলিয়ে যায়। রাতভর বৃষ্টি হওয়ায় আজ শনিবারও অনেক সড়ক পানিতে ডুবে যাওয়ায় যান চলাচল ব্যাহত হচ্ছে। এতে দুর্ভোগে পড়েন স্কুলগামী শিশুরা। এ ছাড়া কর্মস্থলের যাওয়ার পথে যানবাহনের অভাবে বৃষ্টিতে ভিজতে দেখা যায় অনেককে।

রাজধানীর বেশির ভাগ এলাকা হাঁটুপানিতে ডুবে যায়। সড়কে যানবাহন চলাচলও থমকে গিয়ে ভোগান্তির মাত্রা বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে। সকালে আকাশে কালো মেঘ ও ঝিরঝির বৃষ্টি দেখেও যাঁরা বাইরে বের হয়েছিলেন, তাঁদের বৃষ্টিতে ভিজতে হয়েছে। তিন দিনের বৃষ্টির পানি রাজধানীর সড়ক-অলিগলিতে জমেছে। তবে শনিবার সাপ্তাহিক ছুটি থাকায় রাস্তাঘাটে মানুষের উপস্থিতি কম।

রাজধানীর মিরপুর, গ্রিনরোড, বসুন্ধরা সিটির পেছনের রাস্তা, তেজকুনি পাড়া, তেজতুরী বাজার, খিলগাঁও, গোড়ান, বাসাবো, নয়াপল্টন, কাকরাইল, মৌচাক, মগবাজারের ভেতরের দিকে গলি, ফার্মগেট থেকে কারওয়ান বাজার এলাকার অধিকাংশ সড়কই পানিতে তলিয়ে রয়েছে। কোথাও হাঁটু পানি, আবার কোথাও কোমর পানি জমে রয়েছে। বৃষ্টি চলতে থাকায় জমা পানির পরিমাণ বাড়ছেই।

মিরপুরের ১১ নম্বর কালশী রোড, কাজীপাড়া, সেনপাড়া, ১৩ নম্বর সেকশন এগুলোর বিভিন্ন সড়কে পানি জমে গেছে। মিরপুর ৬ নম্বরের একাংশ, ১০ নম্বর গোলচত্বরের সড়কের একাংশও পানিতে ডুবে গেছে।

Parts of the capital, including Malibag, Rajarbag, Mouchak, Shantibag, Gulbag and Mominbag are waterlogged. Waters have risen past the footpath on roads from Kakrail’s Nightingale Restaurant to the Paltan Model Police Station.

“It is a very bad day,” said tea vendor Hakim Uddin. “I sold nothing yesterday and it seems like I won’t get much today either.”

“I came from Rampura. The rickshaws are charging a lot more. None of the rickshaw pullers wanted to go from Rampura to the Bangladesh Bank area for less than Tk 100. What else can we do but walk?” Many of the smaller roads and alleys in Malibag’s Chowdhurypara are waterlogged, Halim said. The footpath from Malibag to Mouchak is usually crowded with hawkers in the morning, but was clear on Saturday.

Though schools, colleges and public offices and courts are closed Saturday, many school and college students have coaching classes. Many from the Malibag area go to Farmgate for coaching.

Stores in the Malibag and Mouchak area are also closed because of the rain. Many of the roads in Gulbag, Shantibag and Mominbag are also underwater. Restaurant workers on the Malibag and Paltan roads say they have few customers because of the rain. Students waiting for transportation say they had to pass waterlogged streets on their way to class. Higher secondary students Afzal Ul Haque and Rifat Karim said they had been waiting over half an hour for a bus to their coaching centre in Farmgate, whereas many transports are available on most days.

Residents of the capital’s Badda, Rampura, Khilgaon, Shabujbag, Basabo and Jatrabari say that many areas are flooded.

Dhanmondi Road 27, Shukrabad, Farmgate and Indira Road area are also flooded, with water levels reaching waist-high in some areas. “Water has collected all around us,” said Mirpur 60 Feet area resident Mariam Muna. “I was to go to Mirpur – 1 but had to stay home because of the knee-high water.” Though 60 Feet area is at a higher elevation, there is still waterlogging.
